In what order should guitar pedals be set up?
I’ve been playing a guitar for around 10 years but just recently started getting into actually using pedals. Reason being I always wanted to learn everything by playing it without help but now I just want to have fun with effects. The pedals I’ll be using (which are for local gigs, in a hardcore band) are boss noise suppressor, boss overdrive/distortion OS-2, boss chromatic tuner tu-2, and a behringer delay pedal (this is optional, but if I were definitely going to use it I’d like to know where it should go). So basically I’ve heard that your pedals should be in a certain order, and with the 4 pedals I listed, which way should I arrange them?
Generally you’ll want the delay, and any other modulation effects ran through the effects loop of your amp. Modulation effects are delay, reverb, flanger, tremolo, chorus, etc.
Then, in front of your amp, you’ll want (starting from the guitar) you’ll do this:
Guitar —> tuner —–> wah pedal —-> overdrive and distortion —-> noise suppressor —-> compressor/sustainer —-> Amp.
Of course I added a few in there, just in case you get them later. It takes some playing around with, because if you have a Boss compressor, like me, the new ones are noisy, so I put it before the noise suppressor, likewise, some people put the overdrive after the noise suppressor too, but mine are a little noisy.
If you want to put the delay in there, you can put it before or after the noise suppressor, depending on what you’re going for. I have 2 delays, on through the effects loop, and one through the front. The one in the front gets amplified by the sustainer, so when I mute the strings and have a certain delay tempo, it makes this really cool waterfall effect (or I can do stuff similar to the style of East Bay Ray in the Dead Kennedy’s…. listen to Holiday in Cambodia to get an idea). The other delay is mixed in the background for other songs/solo’s. I have the delay before the noise suppressor because it will cut off the fading out/trailing effect, allowing me to control how many times it repeats a little more. Some people want that effect so they put it after the noise suppressor… again, mine has a lot of noise because I have so many pedals, so the noise suppressor would be useless if I had everything after it.
Just play with it and see what you like best.
My effects board:
Guitar –> Wah–> TS-9 overdrive –> Delay –> moddified MT-2 for extra low end –> Boss Tremolo –> Boss Compressor/sustainer —> ISP Decimator —> Amp.
As you can see, I’ve put the tremolo in the chain as well. I just added it, and might take it out, and I might swap the position of the sustainer and decimator after the sustainer is moddified to correct the volume loss noise problem.
